A Note On The Stock Market - 1051 Words
Introduction The stock market has seen a lot of fluctuation during the months of February, March, and beginning of April. This can be noted to the new President in office, Mr. Trump. He has spent a great amount of his life as a businessman, and many investors saw this as a positive omen as to what would happen to the stock market and their investments. In fact, right before the presidential election in November, stock prices and indexes plunged as uncertainty in whether he or Mrs. Clinton would take office in such a close presidential race. After the announcement that there was a projected win for Mr. Trump, these stock prices and indexes that recently plummeted, increase rapidly; even to a price higher than before the uncertainty of theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He signed executive orders that limited new regulations and was calling for review of Dodd-Frank regulation of financial firms. Companies that benefitted most from these deregulations contributed to most of the growth. T he first quarterly earnings after the election showed growth and many companies plan to spend money on new equipment and hiring. Companies setting out to hire more employees lowered the employment rate, which continue the stock market growth. The hallmark of stock indexes increasing was on Thursday, March 2nd when the DIJA surged over 300 points. The SP 500 rose 32.32 points and the Nasdaq rose 78.59 points as well. Investors showed optimism in the President to deregulate more and passing tax policies that are better for corporations, as well as hopes that the federal reserve will increase interest rates. The rise came after President Trump spoke to Congress with an optimistic tone; however, he offered few details for his plans. These events also caused a rise in the treasury interest rates on ten-year treasury notes, causing bank stocks like J.P. Morgan Chase and Bank of America to increase in price as well. The promising of the Trumpââ¬â¢s presidency has many investors optimis tic, but slightly concerned by the high surge. Following the surge in stock indexes, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates. Before they official rose rates, there were many statements from officials about a strong possibility that interest rates would rise. Executive Summary The McLaren Group of Companies is often regarded as a ââ¬Å"small conglomerateâ⬠as the company has several subsidiaries in related areas related to car business such as McLaren Applied Technologies, McLaren Electronics, and McLaren Marketing. However, one of the subsidiaries of the company is Absolute Taste which is a catering company and is one of the diverse businesses of the group separate from their car manufacturing business. McLaren Group caters to a niche market segment which is how it attempts to conquer the obstacles and market barriers prevalent in the mass car market. We will write a custom essay sample on McLaren Group of Companies or any similar topic only for you Order Now Moreover, the company adopts a medium level of diversification in its product portfolio as most of its businesses are interlinked or synergized while Absolute Taste and McLaren Automotives are slightly diverse. However, while operating in the contemporary business environment, McLaren Group operates on the historical perspective of diversification as it can be considered to be anti-competitive. Introduction and Background: The McLaren Group was created by Rob Dennis and is based at McLaren Technology Centre in Surrey, England. The company is now referred to as a ââ¬Å"small conglomerateâ⬠and was initially established by a New Zealander by the name of Bruce McLaren in 1963. The companyââ¬â¢s main focus is on the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula One Racing Team. The McLaren Group now hopes to expand into manufacturing cars rather than just focusing on Formula One and has planned the launch of the McLaren P1, which is the successor to the McLaren F1. Recently, the group has diversified into other areas such as wind devices and other vehicles (McLaren, 2011). The McLaren group has several subsidiaries as it has recently diversified its operations into different areas. The subsidiaries include McLaren Racing which is one of the most successful teams prevalent and ranks second after Ferrari as the oldest active team, winning 182 races, 12 driversââ¬â¢ championships, and 8 constructorââ¬â¢s championships. The second subsidiary is McLaren Electronic Systems which is also a member of the McLaren family and is a supplier to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. McLaren Electronics is responsible for supplying the powertrain control system, software, sensors, components, and ECUââ¬â¢s for the Formula One car as well as other cars present in the Formula One group. McLaren Applied Technologies is responsible for creating technical applications for the McLaren group and also provides services to other teams in involved in sports activities, defence, other automotive sectors, and health and wellness sectors.. McLaren Marketing is another subsidiary of the McLaren group and is primarily responsible for the marketing and promotional activities of McLaren Racing. Another subsidiary of the McLaren group is Absolute Taste which caters to a different business segment than the other businesses of the McLaren group. Absolute Taste is based in London and is a catering company which caters to the needs of numerous private parties including parties of celebrities (McLaren, 2011). McLaren Automotive is not a subsidiary of the McLaren group but is a separate company altogether. The company is a high-end manufacturer of high performance vehicles. The company is in close collaboration with McLaren Racing and basically functions as a primary producer of the Formula One car. The new McLaren Production Centre has been opened near Woking in 2012 and is estimated to value at ?40 million. The production of the MP4-12 C sports car is due to reach a grand 4000 by 2015 (McLaren, 2011). As the company has diversified into various markets, there were various obstacles and strategies that the company had to conquer and implement. This report will focus upon the strategy the McLaren group implemented in order to enter the mass car market, define the level of diversification that the McLaren group implements, and discuss the McLaren Groupââ¬â¢s approach to diversification compared to the historical perspective discussed by Guld and Luchs (1993). Market Entry Barriers in Mass Car Market: There are several market entry barriers in the mass car market as competition is high and there are many highly renowned firms competing for market share. However, as the McLaren Group has attempted to penetrate the car manufacturing market, they had to conquer many obstacles and market entry barriers. The McLaren Group was already rather popular in related market segments to car manufacturing such as the production of the Formula One racing car and McLaren Racing team. Thus, the company had relevant market experience as well as a market reputation to enable the company to gain consumer confidence. This was one of the methods in which the company was able to conquer the market entry barriers prevalent in the mass car market (Melvin, 2006). However, the fact also remains that the McLaren Group is manufacturing cars catering to a niche market segment and are not focusing on catering to the mass market. McLaren Group has produced a highly expensive premium vehicle which is not for ordinary use but is used by racers, collectors, and/or the elite class who are interested in buying a premium vehicle. Thus, the target market that McLaren Group is focusing upon is not interested in options such as Ford, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, or other alternatives. Hence, these brands are not substitutes for the vehicles made by the McLaren group. The McLaren Group is more focused upon producing street cars and competing with brands such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, and others. The McLaren Groupââ¬â¢s main point of focus is performance and quality and thus they are able to charge a premium price (Melvin, 2006). Accordingly, the McLaren group is catering to a niche market segment instead of catering to the mass market. Thus, they are better able to deal with the pressure from competitors and attract a certain segment of customers towards their cars. This significantly reduces the level of competition that the McLaren Group has to deal with (Melvin, 2006). Level of Diversification: The McLaren Group has a number of businesses in various market segments which have all been mentioned above. Some of the businesses are operating as subsidiaries of the main company while others are completely separate companies. You read "McLaren Group of Companies" in category "Essay examples" However, when analyzing the level of diversification that the McLaren group incorporates into its portfolio mix, there are a number of considerations that must be made. First of all, it is important to note that previously large companies with many unrelated businesses were a source of high scrutiny in the past. Such businesses were highly criticized for being anti-competitive as they would expand into many areas of expertise and aim to force other competitors out of business. However, in recent times, such firms are accused of being uncompetitive as they do not add value across all of their businesses and are operating at a loss. Hence, in current times it is generally considered that diversified companies are not necessarily successful but may be highly unsuccessful if a high level of diversification is employed in the business (Goold Luchs, 1993). When considering the McLaren Group, it is evident that the company does have a portfolio mix which is diversified into various market segments such as electronics, technology, racing, catering, and car manufacturing. However, it is not completely evident that the McLaren Group has over- diversified into completely unrelated businesses and is not adding value to their business (Goold Luchs, 1993). The description of the subsidiary businesses mentions that businesses such as McLaren Applied Technologies, McLaren Electronics, and McLaren Marketing are all catering to the core business of McLaren Racing. While these businesses also apply their expertise in catering to the core business of McLaren Group, they have additional clients in the industry to which they cater to. Thus, they are benefitting their own business and gaining revenue from catering to other clients as well (Guuld Luchs, 1993). However, the McLaren Group is also diversified in a few markets such as in the catering market with their subsidiary Absolute Taste. While this business caters to the private catering needs of celebrities and serves food on private jets, this business is rather unrelated to the other subsidiaries of the McLaren Group which all cater to the electronic and technological needs of McLaren Racing. Hence, while all of the other subsidiaries of the group are related to cars and solutions related to the cars that the McLaren Group focuses upon, the business of Absolute Taste is not related to cars and is catering to a completely different area of business (Johnson et al, 2011). Accordingly, the level of diversification of the McLaren Group is complex as they are not completely catering to unrelated market segments but have some businesses which are not as closely linked or inter-linked with one another. The McLaren Group is regarded as a ââ¬Å"small conglomerateâ⬠as a ââ¬Å"conglomerateâ⬠refers to a company that operates in many unrelated businesses. Hence, it can be said that the McLaren Group does incorporate a medium level of diversification in their product portfolio (Johnson et al, 2007). Upon closer inspection, it can be concluded that the McLaren Group has opted to ââ¬Å"stick to the knittingâ⬠as they have not diversified widely but have stuck to businesses they know best and where their expertise lies. However, the McLaren Gtoup does operate in different markets and requires different areas of expertise in its various businesses such as marketing, technical expertise, electronic expertise, and others. The expertise required in most of its businesses is related to cars although there are various types of skills required in each business. Nevertheless, most of the businesses in McLarenââ¬â¢s Group can be said to have stuck to the knitting and are not highly diversified as all are catering to the particular needs of cars. All of these businesses are interlinked except for Absolute Taste which is diverse from the other businesses of the McLaren Group (Johnson et al, 2011). It can also be said that the businesses of McLaren Group provide synergy with one another as they are all interrelated and provide skills and benefits to one another. McLaren Electronics works on finding electrical solutions to McLaren Racing, while McLaren Marketing seeks to perform the marketing and promotion activities of McLaren Racing. Hence, all of the businesses add value to one another and provide a combination of skills and benefits to one another. While this is a difficult model to implement, the McLaren Group seems to be implementing it quite effectively as the subsidiary companies perform tasks for the core company and also for other clients. Moreover, in this manner, the company is focusing upon its core competencies and strengthening them by horizontally integrating with other related businesses in order to strengthen and provide for the core business (Johnson et al, 2007). Hence, in conclusion, McLaren Groupââ¬â¢s level of diversification can be labeled as medium as they are diversified into business which are mainly related to cars and provide synergy with one another. Their separate business which is not directly linked with their core business is Absolute Taste which is a catering company. McLarenââ¬â¢s Approach to Diversification: Previously, large diverse firms were regarded as ââ¬Å"conglomeratesâ⬠and it was considered that these firms were up toâ⬠no goodâ⬠as they branched out into different markets and sought to drive out competition by catering to several different market needs themselves. Such firms were considered to be too big for their own good and were not seen as socially responsible or healthy firms as they were anti-competitive. They were termed as anti-competitive because they did not give other businesses a chance to compete with them and monopolized the market themselves. As monopolies are not considered healthy for consumers, such firms were previously perceived negatively (Karlsen, 2011). However, the contemporary perspective towards such firms is completely the opposite of the historical perspective as these firms are regarded as being up to ââ¬Å"no goodâ⬠because they are not adding value to themselves or to their other businesses. Hence, such firms are now regarded as uncompetitive (Karlsen, 2011). Accordingly, McLaren Groupââ¬â¢s strategy toward diversification is in line with the historical perspective of diversification as the diversification strategy seems to be anti-competitive. The group seeks economies of scale and other benefits by providing all additional services in line with their core business themselves. Hence, they do not seem to be allowing other businesses to provide services for them and seem to be attempting to cover all aspects regarding their car-related business themselves. They provide technical applications, marketing solutions, and electrical solutions for their racing team and the cars they produce. Hence, while catering to other clients as well, they use their own company to perform the tasks related to the car-related business (Karlsen, 2011). Conclusion: From the analysis conducted, it is evident that the McLaren Group is not as diverse as some other companies are but is operating in a synergized environment which has many interlinked businesses providing benefits to one another. Hence, the McLaren Group can be termed as a ââ¬Å"small conglomerateâ⬠and is operating according to the historical perspective of diversification. References Goold, M. And Luchs, K. Municipal ID Cards Undocumented Immigrants -Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Municipal ID Cards Undocumented Immigrants? Answer: Introduction: If people are not voting, they are putting the control of their world into the hands of someone else, and moreover they do not have any idea where those hands have been. The topic can be introduced with the fact that an election is stated to be an event where one or more people have the opportunity in marketing a choice, like selecting their representatives. According to Morone and Kersh, (2016) people are of the notion that election is unfair for the fact that during presidential voting time as happens in federal election, people will be funding political cartoons accompanied with comic strips expressing that their vote would not be counted for, so there lays no point to vote when their candidate is not going to win. This paper will discuss about the things people need to consider and look upon before voting in federal elections. Voting should be made obligatory just like the jury duty for every eligible person to participate Discussion: During the time of his presidency, Abraham Lincoln did preach the significance of the government being for, of and by the people. He did argue on the fact that voters play the most imperative role in making certain the selected government reflects their aspiration and functions as per the constitutional guidelines (Mickey, Levitisky Way, 2017). It is important for an individual in making an effort in every way possible to cast their vote in state, local and federal elections, especially at the federal level, where the Head of the nation, the President is being elected by the people of each state, through the Electoral College. In the discussion part it can be stated that the federal election takes place once in every two years and it is been administered by the local and state governments, even though the essentials of the ways elections are conducted differs management the states. So it becomes way more important for people in exercising their dispensation to vote, because failing in doing so would result in people fundamentally facilitating other voters in making decisions on their behalf (Bulman-Pozen, 2017). This would lead to in letting their voices being heard over the voters who do not make an effort in going to the polls. Thus it is important and one of the primary reasons why people should decide to cast their vote in the elections. The result of the elections can have a major impact on the personal freedom enjoyed by the voters along with taxes and other regular life they generally take for granted. Elections generally have a far reaching impact, people do have the duty of casting their vote if they think of having a say in the way their futures would play out. There are many within Canada and USA who possesses justifiable reason in not making it to the polls, though they still have the opportunity of casting their vote through the request for an absentee ballot. The ballet can be either mailed or they do have the prospect of casting a vote of absentee in person at their local office for election. If they are not being able to vote on the day of Election, they can still make certain that their voice is being heard and they make proper use of their voting opportunity (Wiles, 2015). It is upto the voters in deciding how they want to cast their vote and whether they at all want to do the same. It might happen that federal election laws might alter at moments notice, so it becomes significant for the people in keeping the information related to their voting updated as much required. If they shift or want any alteration of their affiliation for the party, for instance, they need to update the same information well before the subsequent election happens (De Graauw, 2014). It is stated to be illegal under the system of federal law for people to connive in injuring, oppressing, threatening or intimidating an individual in getting that person to vote a meticulous way for the Vice President and the President. One thing that needs to be noted is a poll worker who frightens an individual by asking for additional information than is required legally for the purpose of voting. People have often been dispirited from their rights of voting because of harassment- generally by the people who claim them to be poll watchers and are overly belligerent, or with the indecent exploitation of the enforcement of law personnel at the places of polling (Epstein, 2014). People are not supposed to be beleaguered about the person to be voted when that individual is voting. Conclusion: The system of voting is stated to be at the heart of the representative democracy. It is the tool that is been used by the citizens in creating a government of democratic nature. When every vote of every citizen has equal value, parliaments can replicate the peoples political will. It can be concluded that if the system of voting deforms what the voters have to say, governments cannot be properly responsible and democracy is often negotiated. References: Bulman-Pozen, J. Community Values Essay Example For Students
Community Values Essay Community ValuesThere are not many people out there who have their own religion; just themselves in one religion made up on their own. People like to have a sense of belonging. Therefore most, if not all, religions have a huge communal aspect to them. While a person does gain some personal experience in any one religion in some form or another, religion is not solely personal. It is widely social. Someone who is brought up in a certain community that has a particular religion typically does not change his or her religion later on in life. The person grows adapted to the religion that he or she was forced upon. Typically the person does not change religion because he or she wants the acquiescence of their community. Therefore religion is not for person gain, but for acceptance in the community in which he or she lives. More generally, an individual is likely to take up the same religion that is predominant in the area in which he or she lives. Religion is an issue of community values, not personal experience. This can be seen by taking a look at all the component parts of religion. One of which is belief. To even begin a religion a people have to set a certain belief. Whether it be monotheism, polytheism or no theism at all, a certain faith structure is crucial in order to have and maintain religion. This belief or faith is chosen, yet again, by the people of the area. They are the ones that decide what to believe and how to believe it. Then the people come who, more by convenience than be choice, partake in these certain beliefs. It is almost considered necessary for people to believe the same ideas who are in the same community in order for more peaceful living. For example, a person would not find a Christian practicing their faith in Indiaââ¬â¢s predominantly Hindu villages. If a person was born in India he/she would more than likely practice the Hindu religion just as if a person that was born in South Chinaââ¬â¢s Taoist areas would practice Taoism. This is not a personal choice. It is a community effort in the way that the community forces their ways upon an individual. In order for these beliefs to occur, though, people must engage in conversation with one another to be knowledgeable about the correct belief of their particular religion. This stands true whether or not the religion is orthopraxy or orthodoxy. Without people setting the beliefs, there are no beliefs. Most often these beliefs are influenced by another component of religion: family values. Family has much to do with religion. It is usually family that decides a religion. In Christianity it is the parents who baptize the infant. They decide that their child is going to follow the Christian religion. The baby has no say in the matter. Therefore, it seems logical that as that child gets older, he or she would just stick with that religion instead of upsetting their parents to whom they are supposed to ââ¬Å"obey.â⬠This concept holds true for most all children of all religions. In the Hindu religion, the family as well as the community has structure to it. Hindu families are positio ned by caste, the color of their skin. Within the family, there are rules to go by. These rules were set by the community and followed by all. One can not marry out of caste, except on some known circumstances and job as well as food are all caste related. In this structured lifestyle how would it be possible for someone to say that he or she would like to practice a different religion than the community and/or family? Unless exile was not a big deal to the individual, one would naturally not even fathom it. Family has a great impact on childrenââ¬â¢s lives. Instead of going out and learning all the religions and then later on picking the one religion they feel suites them best, kids are often stuck with the religion of their parents. Therefore, how could one say that their religion is for personal experience when it was not themselves that picked that religion in the first place but rather just a series of events that lead them to that particular faith? Plus, in most areas, comm unities generally have superior family values. So, by the ââ¬Å"scare tacticâ⬠the children stay in a religion that they grew up in rather than a religion they could personally relate to better and have more personal gain. By the time that the children grow up, they are so fine tuned into the religion that they grew up in that they do not explore other religious ideas even if it would benefit them. Family habits become traditions and those traditions latch on to a person to become rituals, which is yet another element of religion. .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de , .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de .postImageUrl , .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de , .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de:hover , .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de:visited , .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de:active { border:0!important; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de:active , .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u66059848c60afc4317bc8703a7aa82de:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Summer Reading: Life EssayRituals are practiced throughout all religions. From Christianity to Hinduism to Buddhism to Taoism rituals are observed invariably. Although some, like Taoist rituals, are very severe, like taking ones own life drinking an elixir, people follow them without a doubt. They do this not for personal gains, but for the recognition and approval of the community. Rituals are proven to be very social since most of the time performing one is done in a group. Therefore, while a person does gain individual experience participating in these rituals, the social aspect of them is predominant. Rituals are done throughout the community. It is the community as a whole that decides which rituals are going to fit with the religion and which ones are actually going to be practiced. If the community decided that one such ritual was no good, no one would do it anymore. It would not matter if he or she liked it or not. Personal or individual preferences would not matter if it conflicted with the majorityââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"vote.â⬠Coincidently, if a person did perform a banned ritual, they would most likely be exiled, excommunicated, or alienated from that community and/or religion. An example is Buddhism. In Buddhism a person can get kicked out of a community for wrong behavior, it is an orthopraxy religion. Therefore the thought of getting kicked out of a community affects the way a person thinks and acts. An individual will do just about anything for acceptance. So, if all a person has to do is believe what others believe and perform the rituals others perform in order to stay in a certain community, they will do so. Rituals, in a way, are l ike hand me downs. They are not learned by reading written materials, they are learned by practice. Never-the-less this leads to the next religious constituent: sacred texts. Sacred texts are found in most religions. They are written laws maintained from the time they were made. These scriptures are not made for one personââ¬â¢s benefits but for all the peoples of the religions benefit. Usually people of the same religion will gather to read and or perform some of the sayings in these holy writings. In Hinduism there are the Vedas; in Christianity there is the Bible and so on. Religion could not be anymore a social aspect of life. It is a way for human beings to connect with each other. Influenced by family and enforced by the community, religion is something practiced for acceptance in a community and not for personal gain. Even if a person would rather change his or her religion, chances are he or she will not even bother due to their need for acceptance in the ââ¬Å"groupâ⬠that they live in. People feel better about themselves when they say that their religious affiliation is not just a mere ââ¬Å"follow the leaderâ⬠type game, but a de ep personal and individual decision upon which impacts their lives tremendously. While this may be true for a select few, the majority of people must admit that latter of the fact. Whether they actually do admit it, though, is simply up for grabs. Why Include Literary Devices in Your Sample Personal Narrative Essay?
Why Include Literary Devices in Your Sample Personal Narrative Essay? If you have ever written a personal narrative essay, then you probably have written a sample personal narrative essay including literary devices. Most people do not understand the need to include literary devices in their sample personal narrative essay. The reason is that most people see the word literary as just another word for fancy, artistic or romantic. However, there are many reasons why literary devices are often used in a personal narrative essay, and some of them are listed below. Although some of these reasons are common, others may surprise you.The first reason, and by far the most important reason, is that it helps to show a reader how you think about the situation in a particular way. A novel is more than just a story, and one of the most common mistakes that people make when writing a story is that they write it from their point of view. In other words, they write from the point of view of the protagon ist of the story. However, if you are going to write a personal narrative essay, then the goal is to show readers what you see from their point of view. That is where it makes sense to use literary devices to describe the character's thoughts and feelings, including their thoughts and feelings from their point of view.Another reason that using literary devices is important in a narrative essay is that literary devices can often help to clarify the thoughts of the characters and show how the characters see the situation. For example, if you are writing a biography, then you would naturally want to give readers an idea of the personalities of the characters. However, if you are writing a fictional story, then you might not be able to describe how the characters feel or how they really feel about the situation. However, if you use a literary device, then you can certainly explain how the characters think. Therefore, they will have a better idea of what is happening, even if the circumsta nces are fictional. Since readers are usually left with the impression that they were in a place and time that they cannot really remember, it is important to give readers a good idea of what is happening to them. Finally, if you are going to use a literary device, then you will have a better chance of making your story real and to make it more believable. Readers tend to remember a story that seems real, because they have actually experienced something similar.

Lojack and the Micrologic Alliance free essay sample
Financially, sales are climbing, but year over year growth is declining. The distribution system through auto retailers seems stuck to new car sales. The Lock strategy at the present time consists of several discrete variables. Lock has elected to expand into new geographic areas and markets which is a logical growth strategy for the firm which has established an enviable reputation in terms of asset recovery systems. This company has developed a new tracking unit that permits it to move Into new segments such as trailers while simultaneously reducing costs for such units, therefore, establishing itself as a cost leader in the sector. This combined with a strong differentiation of product through law enforcement networks ivies Lock a strong competitive advantage. These are strengths that cannot be quickly or easily duplicated and because of the proprietary technical aspect of this product.Competitors would have to try and find substitute products to compete directly with Lock. We will write a custom essay sample on Lojack and the Micrologic Alliance or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Competitive Environment If we use Michael Porters 5 forces as a measure of the competitive environment, we see the following: New Entrants Telemeter and other competitors were on the market prior to Locks entrance and other competitors are entering the market through GAPS based systems such as Instars. These systems are not a onetime purchases but Incur monthly fees to maintain service and may require the use of a cell phone. Absolutes Just as with GAPS, there is a threat of substitute products coming on-line through new technology, but this threat should be mitigated by Locks network with local law enforcement agencies. Suppliers Suppliers are also a threat as the auto industry is developing its own telemetric OFF accelerate the design cycle. Further, their inability to deliver state-of-the-art entertainment, communication, navigation, and other telemetric (navigation, driver- airing, and communication systems) clearly highlights the manufacturers reluctance at relying on these sta ndards. The good news is that the automakers appear to have realized their errors and limitations and are participating in the development of new network standards for both mission-critical and convenience or entertainment systems. (Wright, 1999) Lock must continue to market its law enforcement advantage to thwart off this threat. Buyers At this stage, buyers have relatively limited buying power due to the lack of alternative technology. However, the threat is the heavy reliance on car dealers to sell he product. If there is no incentive to do so, then the buyer may lack the knowledge that would drive the purchase. Intensity of Rivalry Although the product is in its growing stages, and there is no clear competition, the increased activity in this sector could be conducive of a threat to achieve a large enough market share to make the implementation worthwhile. S. W. O. T. Analysts INTERNAL STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES Impeccable consumer franchise ; Brand strength Proven track record Law enforcement network ; Proprietary technology ; Reliance on alliances for distribution ; backbone outsourcedReliance on automotive industry Limited distribution systems New Markets Expanded distribution channels Leverage strong brand Strategic alliances Expand existing technology ; New Entrants Substitute products ; Local bureaucracy (political environment) Shift in alliances Telemetric OPPORTUNITIES THREATS EXTERNAL Perspective on network level strategy Technical Both Lock and Microcosmic embrace the embedded organizational structure. While these technologies. Locks technology would not have been possible without the alliance with local law enforcement agencies, Motorola, and Microcosmic.Microcosms existence, until recently, had been to partner with organizations to leverage its technical creativity to further develop the companies that it works for. It would take an equi ty stand in these companies and take a long term approach. In order for Microcosmic to be successful in this venture, it would need to rely on Locks distribution and marketing systems. Not only to sell its products but also to ensure its own financial stability. And if Lock is to review its long term strategy, it must understand that research and development are not at the core of its operation.Motorola is a key component to both Lock and Microcosmic and has been a strong partner providing vital assistance. However, moving forward, they cannot be relied on to only provide this technology to Lock. They are a much larger company and will look to broaden their reach. In the fall of 1999 Motorola was already working to become a driving force in the telemetric industry and moved to position itself with the major car companies. Who can you count on to bring the promise of telemetric to the world? The same people who have been changing the way we communicate on-the-go since 1928. Motorola is driving innovation with telemetric -? the newest way to take your world with you. Come to think of it -? is Motorola reinventing the car radio for the Internet? (Boroughs, 1999) Motorola is designing the 3rd generation Lock, and it should be available in the fall however a continued alliance with Motorola could combine Locks strong results with another up and coming GAPS capabilities, and Lock could potentially lose its strong brand if it became a part of a larger offering. Recommendations Short Term Lock should look to form a loose alliance with Microcosmic. This would allow forLock to expand into the new market of construction equipment where need exist and no clear provider exist. An alliance between these two organizations has a proven track record and a proven product that can be marketed. The first step in the alliance would be to tackle the construction equipment market. This is a market that has a strong need for a location and asset management technology there i s no clear market leader. The combination of Lock;s proven solution for tracking and the ability of Microcosmic to develop strong asset management software would allow for strong penetration in his market. As in the past, both organizations should look to work in their core areas of expertise. Lock understands how to market and distribute the products and Microcosmic should immediately assume the RD function. This will allow both companies to continue to drive down cost. Lock currently has enough cash on hand to assist the need for cash with Microcosmic. At this point, the cash infusion should be done as a low or no interest loan to Microcosmic. The partnership work well in the beginning, and over time, Microcosmic can determine if this is their core business. If to, they will be able to sell this product back to Lock Just as it did the first time and move in a different direction or become a subsidiary. Motorola is currently working on the 3rd generation Lock and Microcosmic should work directly with Motorola on Medium Term Once a clear hold on the construction market is secured, then the alliance will have the opportunity to move into the trailer market. A proven track record in auto recovery and construction equipment asset management will allow strong credibility and should allow Lock and Microcosmic to become the market leader.During this take both organizations will need to determine the structure of the company and if they are able to grow construction equipment sales to the same rate as existing auto sales then Lock would be in a position to either absorb Microcosmic into the existing organization (assuming this is agreeable to both parties) or turn Microcosmic into a subsidiary. Long Term Emerging markets will be critical to the l ong term success of Lock. With a strong foothold on the construction market this area would be a logical first step into emerging markets as contraction equipment would usually surpass new car sales.Immersing markets will provide the strongest revenue growths for the company and is possible this may need to be moved into the mid-term focus depending on the success for the technology. Critical Success Factors Industry critical success factors need to include a standard platform for technology on both the asset management device and vehicle retrieval systems. If too many technologies exist, it will become confusion for consumers, and they may abandon products all together. The following list the critical success factors for a Lock Microcosmic alliance in terms on timing each holds the same importance. The two companies must have a willingness and desire to form an alliance 2 Microcosmic must be able to finish the work on asset management software in the short term and it must be fully compatible with the existing Lock technology it must come in-line with existing cost estimates 3 Lock will need to develop a strong marketing and distribution plan to enter the construction market and a strong foothold must be established to keep back competition 4 The technology in the construction market must be compatible with trailer and fleet market needs 5 Current US distributio n systems must be compatible with overseas markets alack just be able to understand and successfully maneuver in immersing markets and it needs first mover advantage to establish itself as the market leader.Financial Financial projections are highly dependent on the critical success factors being met and I will only give a small example to the entrance into the construction market as it exists today. With 170,000 to 200,000 pieces of construction equipment being produced in the US each year, I believe that we could start by collecting 5% of that market in the first year and the 10% the following year and leveling out at 15% for the bequest 3 to 5 years. There are approximately 180,000 pieces of equipment in rate as new sales. Lock is currently running at a 43% profit margin and had an 8 year high of 53%. We will use the high (53%) for a cost as there will be quite a bit more expenses in rolling out a new product. The unit should sell at the $1,000 used price point and a $50 per month management fee.Based on these conservative projections, the yearly revenue in this market would level out at $mill with and a net income of $4. 7 mil per year, assuming all cost stay in line with current financial. This would add 14% in E. P. S. The first year and 200% the following year finally leveling out at 100%. Implementation Because of the history of the two parties and the nature of the work, progress could begin immediately. The matter of a cash infusion for Microcosmic should be resolved quickly as well as the nature of the strategic alignment. Lock should continue to develop the third generation with Motorola and determine their role, with Microcosmic, moving forward.

The Story of Semele as Told by Nemesis
The Story of Semele as Told by Nemesis Semele was a daughter of Poseidons grandson, Cadmus, the King of Thebes, and Harmonia. Through Harmonia, Semele was a granddaughter of Ares and the cousin of Aphrodite, and therefore, great-granddaughter of Zeus. Do you remember the genealogy of Achilles? Zeus was his great-great-great-grandfather once and great-great-great-great-grandfather twice on Achilles fathers mothers side. Lusty Zeus even wanted to mate with Thetis, Achilles mother but was scared off when he heard that her son would eclipse his father in fame. Considering the number of times Zeus insinuated himself into the genealogies of the heroes, and the founders of the great cities, youd think he was trying single-handedly to populate Greece. Despite the fact that Zeus was (old enough to be) Semeles great-granddad, Semele, and Zeus became lovers. Hera, jealous as usual - and, as usual, with a cause - disguised herself as a mortal nurse. Working in this capacity at the Theban court of King Cadmus, Hera as nurse Beroe gained the confidence of Princess Semele. When Semele became pregnant, Hera-Beroe put an idea into her mind. You might be more familiar with another variation on the same theme: The most beautiful woman in the world, Psyche, was given as a bride to a mysterious creature (whom she did not know was the son of Aphrodite Cupid) as a punishment for detracting from the worship of the goddess Aphrodite. Life was grand even though Psyche was only allowed to visit with her husband in the cover of darkness. Psyches two jealous sisters did what they could to spoil Psyches nighttime fun. They told Psyche her husband was probably a hideous monster and that was why he didnt want her to see him. Persuaded that they might be right, Psyche disobeyed the rule set down by her divine husband. To get a clear look at him, she shone a lamp on his face, saw the most beautiful being she could have imagined, and dropped a bit of lamp oil upon him. Burned, he instantly awoke. Seeing that Psyche had distrusted and therefore disobeyed him (actually, his mother Aphrodite), he flew away. For Psyche to regain her gorgeous husband Cupid, she had to placate Aphrodite. This included making a return trip to the Underworld. Like Psyches jealous sister, the goddess who is a past-mistress of jealousy, Hera, sowed seeds of doubt and jealousy in Semele. Hera persuaded Semele that she wouldnt know if the man who was presenting himself to her as Zeus was a god unless he revealed himself to Semele in godlike form. Furthermore, Semele wouldnt know if Zeus loved her unless he made love to her in the same way he made love to his wife, Hera. Semele was young, and pregnancy can do odd things, so Semele, who probably should have known better, prevailed upon Zeus to grant her (or rather Hera-Beroes) request. Why did Zeus oblige? Was he vain enough to want to impress the young woman? Was he foolish enough to think it wouldnt hurt? Did he know he could convince anyone that he was under an obligation of honor to do as Semele requested? Did he want to be both mother and father to the unborn child? Ill let you decide. Zeus, revealing himself in his full thunder-bolting glory, killed the frail human Semele. Before her body was cold, Zeus had snatched from it the six-month unborn child and sewed it into his thigh. When the thigh-sewn child was born, he was named Dionysus. Among the Thebans, rumors - planted by Hera - persisted that Zeus had not been his father. Instead, Dionysus was the entirely mortal son of Semele and a mortal man. Dionysus dispensed with any mortal who cast aspersions on his mothers reputation by doubting that her sexual liaison had been divine - although why mating with the philandering Zeus confers honor in mortal circles is beyond me. Whats more, with the permission of Zeus, the dutiful Dionysus went to the Underworld and raised his mother Semele from the dead so that, like Psyche, she could live along with her child, among the gods.
