During 1992 in South Central Los Angeles, a riot started after the news of four white Los Angeles police officers beating Rodney King was published on TV. It became daily news. The riot caused many crimes to occur; participants of the riot burned down business stores, destroyed properties, and some activities involved guns that have led to many deaths. Many South Central residents were unsatisfied with police brutality and the way their community were being treated. Although the riot only lasted for about a week, about 52 people were killed (Kivisto and Rundblad 82). The whole neighborhood were ruined and destroyed. Ever since that riot, there were over 1 million property loss (Kivisto and Rundblad 82), and over 700 businesses were burned down (Bergesen and Herman para. 1). Many people lost their jobs because their workplace were destroyed. There were many different reasons that may have caused the 1992 riot in Los Angeles to occur. However, not all of them were the main reasons of the riot. There were many side causes, for instance, after the video of Rodney King being beaten was shown on television, residents of South Central Los Angeles started to act up. They were affected by how King was being mistreated and how police brutality played a big role in the video and their society. King’s incident was very similar to many other cases. This was the place to be on an idle Saturday in this small suburb of New Jersey, drawing in dozens of children and preteens every weekend. My party has to be here, mom! † I whined, convinced that nowhere else would be quite as fun, even though every other kid in my class celebrated their birthday there as well. So instead of hosting a hair-braiding, truth-or-dare slumber party, or going to see the latest preteen comedy movie, my birthday festivities would of course occur here, at United Skates of America. I waited the month or so until my party with bated breath, patience not one of the virtues bestowed upon an (almost) ten-year-old. When the day had finally arrived, my family piled in our car with my two best friends; Eileen, a slightly too tall for her age, kindhearted Irish brunette, and Jen, a spunky blonde tomboy with one of those smiles that stretch across the face and matching dimples to go with it- the rest of the eager party-goers would meet us there. We arrive at the rink, a large concrete building with paint the gray color of dingy gym socks peeling in various places around the entrance, the poorly marked building easily missed by the untrained eye. A sign decorated with faded primary colors that barely still read the name of the rink hangs to show that the facility is still operational. Car doors slam open and then shut again as children dash from the vehicles, the gravel of the unpaved parking lot crunches underfoot. Children immediately begin to chatter amongst themselves as though they had no t seen the others for a long period of time. Eventually however, a short freckly redhead recalls everyone’s attention as to why we had gathered at this rink in the first place. The mad rush begins again and 15 or so pairs of short legs sprint towards the door. Walking through the oversized metal door that weighs more than it should, children’s eyes light up with a joy only superseded by discovering all the presents left under the Christmas tree by Santa. First things first, everyone must rent their skates. These skates have been worn several times a day for who knows how many years, the scent drifting from behind the rental desk not much different than that of bowling shoes. Parents help make sure the skates are laced up tight enough. Now that everyone’s feet feel more like they are tied in a straight jacket rather than wearing shoes, it is time to hit the floor. Other skaters fly past me, creating a breeze as I try to set foot in the rink. I place one ska te on the smooth, polished hardwood floor and immediately BANG! Feet still in the skates fly up above my head as I land flat on my back. As a testament to childhood resiliency, I get back on my feet, silently thanking my mom for making me wear the tacky pink helmet previously decorated with shimmering stickers in various girly shapes and hoping no one I knew saw. The carefree skating continues for an hour or so as the latest pop hits blast over the speaker system- boy bands belt out love songs irrelevant to our generation at the time and Britney asks to be hit â€Å"†¦One More Time. † Eventually it is time for the rink’s mascot to make his momentary appearance. After proper introduction, Skate-o-saurus glides onto the rink, a graceful swan in an oversized green and orange dinosaur costume, probably worn by a local high school or college student. He leads the rink in an intense game of limbo, using probably the stick from an old broom or mop, decorated with paint and streamers to disguise its intended purpose. This game on land is not easily mastered by all, but with the addition of skates it becomes especially tricky. Each skater takes their turn, the hairs on the top of their heads brushing the ‘limbo stick,’ and one by one skaters fall to the ground, muffled thuds as bodies succumb to gravity. Shortly after, everyone forgets who won and resumes to skating, the more experienced skaters challenging their friends to a race, and those not so experienced just trying to keep from crashing and causing another dent or scuff in the already marred floor, a reminder of those who have fallen before. When just about every stomach is gargling, a gruff voice crackles through the speakers and requests, almost omnisciently, that â€Å"the guests of Nicole’s party come to the party room for food. † The exhausted skaters stumble into the room, dripping sweat onto the multicolored carpet that conveniently hides stains. Kids flop down into chairs all around me. Therefore most, if not all, religions have a huge communal aspect to them. While a person does gain some personal experience in any one religion in some form or another, religion is not solely personal. It is widely social. Someone who is brought up in a certain community that has a particular religion typically does not change his or her religion later on in life. The person grows adapted to the religion that he or she was forced upon. Typically the person does not change religion because he or she wants the acquiescence of their community. Therefore religion is not for person gain, but for acceptance in the community in which he or she lives. More generally, an individual is likely to take up the same religion that is predominant in the area in which he or she lives. Religion is an issue of community values, not personal experience. This can be seen by taking a look at all the component parts of religion. One of which is belief. To even begin a religion a people have to set a certain belief. Whether it be monotheism, polytheism or no theism at all, a certain faith structure is crucial in order to have and maintain religion. This belief or faith is chosen, yet again, by the people of the area. They are the ones that decide what to believe and how to believe it. Then the people come who, more by convenience than be choice, partake in these certain beliefs. It is almost considered necessary for people to believe the same ideas who are in the same community in order for more peaceful living. For example, a person would not find a Christian practicing their faith in India’s predominantly Hindu villages. If a person was born in India he/she would more than likely practice the Hindu religion just as if a person that was born in South China’s Taoist areas would practice Taoism. This is not a personal choice. It is a community effort in the way that the community forces their ways upon an individual. In order for these beliefs to occur, though, people must engage in conversation with one another to be knowledgeable about the correct belief of their particular religion. Most often these beliefs are influenced by another component of religion: family values. Family has much to do with religion. It is usually family that decides a religion. In Christianity it is the parents who baptize the infant. They decide that their child is going to follow the Christian religion. The baby has no say in the matter. Therefore, it seems logical that as that child gets older, he or she would just stick with that religion instead of upsetting their parents to whom they are supposed to â€Å"obey.† This concept holds true for most all children of all religions. In the Hindu religion, the family as well as the community has structure to it. Hindu families are positio ned by caste, the color of their skin. Within the family, there are rules to go by. These rules were set by the community and followed by all. One can not marry out of caste, except on some known circumstances and job as well as food are all caste related. In this structured lifestyle how would it be possible for someone to say that he or she would like to practice a different religion than the community and/or family? Unless exile was not a big deal to the individual, one would naturally not even fathom it. Family has a great impact on children’s lives. Instead of going out and learning all the religions and then later on picking the one religion they feel suites them best, kids are often stuck with the religion of their parents. Therefore, how could one say that their religion is for personal experience when it was not themselves that picked that religion in the first place but rather just a series of events that lead them to that particular faith? Plus, in most areas, comm unities generally have superior family values. So, if all a person has to do is believe what others believe and perform the rituals others perform in order to stay in a certain community, they will do so. Rituals, in a way, are l ike hand me downs. They are not learned by reading written materials, they are learned by practice. Never-the-less this leads to the next religious constituent: sacred texts. Sacred texts are found in most religions. They are written laws maintained from the time they were made. These scriptures are not made for one person’s benefits but for all the peoples of the religions benefit. Usually people of the same religion will gather to read and or perform some of the sayings in these holy writings. In Hinduism there are the Vedas; in Christianity there is the Bible and so on. Religion could not be anymore a social aspect of life. It is a way for human beings to connect with each other. Influenced by family and enforced by the community, religion is something practiced for acceptance in a community and not for personal gain. Even if a person would rather change his or her religion, chances are he or she will not even bother due to their need for acceptance in the â€Å"group† that they live in. People feel better about themselves when they say that their religious affiliation is not just a mere â€Å"follow the leader† type game, but a de ep personal and individual decision upon which impacts their lives tremendously.
